Terms of Service
Effective date: April 27, 2026
These are the terms for using Steel Trap. They’re meant to be readable. If something is unclear, ask us.
The short version
- Be honest about who you are and don’t abuse the service.
- You own what you write. We just store and display it for you.
- We try hard to keep Steel Trap running, but we don’t make guarantees, and we can’t be liable for things outside our control.
- Either of us can end the relationship at any time.
1. Who we are
Steel Trap (“Steel Trap,” “we,” “us”) is a hunting memory system operated by its maintainers. By creating an account or using the service, you (“you”) are agreeing to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.
If you don’t agree, please don’t use Steel Trap.
2. Your account
- You must provide a working email address. We sign you in with single-use links sent to that address, so keep it secure.
- One person, one account. Don’t impersonate someone else, and don’t share your sign-in link with others.
- You’re responsible for what happens under your account, so don’t leave it logged in on devices you don’t trust.
- You must be old enough to enter into a contract where you live (in the U.S., that generally means 13 or older; some states require 18). Steel Trap isn’t designed for children.
3. What you put in Steel Trap
Your content stays yours
You own the hunts, journal entries, photos, voice memos, and other content you put into Steel Trap (“Your Content”). We don’t claim any ownership over it.
What you let us do with it
To actually run the app, you give us a limited license to store, copy, back up, transmit, and display Your Content — but only as needed to provide Steel Trap to you. This license ends when you delete the content or your account (except for backups, which roll off as described in the Privacy Policy).
We don’t use Your Content to train AI models. If we ever offer features that would send Your Content to a third-party AI provider on your behalf, we’ll be explicit about it and let you opt in.
What you promise about it
You promise that you have the right to put Your Content into Steel Trap, and that it doesn’t:
- violate the law, including hunting and wildlife laws in your jurisdiction;
- infringe someone else’s rights (copyright, privacy, etc.);
- include other people’s personal information without their consent (e.g., adding a hunt party member implies you have permission to record their name);
- contain malware, scraping bots, or anything designed to harm the service or its users.
If we get a credible report that Your Content violates the law or these Terms, we may remove it or suspend the account. We try to give a heads-up first when we can.
4. Acceptable use
Don’t:
- attempt to break, overload, or reverse-engineer the service;
- use Steel Trap to harass, threaten, or stalk anyone;
- scrape or bulk-export anyone’s data other than your own;
- use Steel Trap to plan or document anything illegal — including poaching, trespassing, or hunting outside of regulated seasons.
Do:
- enjoy hunting season.
- tell us when something’s broken or unclear.
5. Service availability
Steel Trap is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We work to keep it reliable, but we don’t promise:
- that it will be available 24/7,
- that it will be free of bugs or errors,
- that it will fit any particular purpose.
We may change, pause, or remove features. For material changes that affect how you use the product, we’ll give reasonable notice when we can.
6. Beta features
We may label features as “beta,” “preview,” or similar. Those features can change or disappear without notice, and they may not be as polished or reliable as the rest of the app. Use them knowing that.
7. Pricing
Steel Trap is free at the time of this effective date. If we introduce paid plans, we’ll give you advance notice and clear terms before charging anything to you.
8. Ending the relationship
- You can leave at any time. Delete your account from Settings. Account deletion is permanent — we don’t recover deleted data.
- We can end accounts that violate these Terms or that pose a risk to the service or its users. We try to warn first when the situation allows.
- Inactive accounts. We may delete accounts that haven’t been signed into for an extended period (currently 24+ months), after warning by email.
When the relationship ends, the parts of these Terms that should reasonably survive (sections 3 [licensing], 9, 10, 11, and 12) continue to apply.
9. No warranties
To the fullest extent allowed by law, Steel Trap is provided without any warranties — express or implied — including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, Steel Trap and its maintainers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, hunts, or opportunities, even if we’ve been told such damages are possible.
For any claim where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) USD $100.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow these limits, in which case they apply only to the extent permitted.
11. Indemnification
If someone brings a claim against us because of Your Content or your use of Steel Trap in violation of these Terms, you agree to defend us and cover the reasonable costs and damages.
12. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes arising out of these Terms will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Delaware, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. Nothing in this section limits any non-waivable rights you have under your local law.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as Steel Trap grows. If we do, we’ll bump the Effective date at the top and — for material changes — email you before the change takes effect. Because this file lives in our public repo, you can view the full history and diff of every change.
If you keep using Steel Trap after a change takes effect, you’re agreeing to the new Terms. If you don’t agree, please delete your account.
14. Miscellaneous
- These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and Steel Trap about the service.
- If a court finds part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- Our not enforcing a particular provision once doesn’t mean we waive it.
- You can’t transfer your rights under these Terms without our written permission. We can transfer ours (e.g., as part of a sale or reorganization) and we’ll let you know if that happens.
